The pre-party 'pamper'

Soaking in a bath is great for a relaxing Sunday, but there are other pre-party essentials that often feel more like chores than treats. I'm talking hair masks, face masks, exfoliating, shaving, nail-painting, the works. This post is devoted to those need-to-do-but-don't-feel-like-doing-before-the-party-tonight personal grooming necessities, and my recommendations to make them a little more pleasant.

  • Threading: Since moving to the UK I've started getting threaded again, and it really does make a massive difference. This is best a step completed a few days before the big event - My eyebrows tend to be fine, but sometimes my upper lip can get a little irritated immediately afterwards, so best to give it a few days for you skin to settle.
  • Hair Mask: A hair mask is always a good bet for keeping locks looking their best, and an overnight mask means no time wasted waiting for it to work. I recently picked up the Charles Worthington Moisture Seal Overnight Ultimate Hair Healer from Boots, and will be my product of choice for my coming parties. I can't vouch for it quite yet but will update you if it turns out to be great. My other tried and true pick is the Philip Kingsley Elastisizer which I would highly highly recommend.
  • Face Mask: When I'm short on time and busy with everything that comes the holiday season, speed and results are key. Look no further than the Kate Somerville Exfolikate - a dark green slightly abrasive combo physical and chemical exfoliant/mask that smells of cloves and can be applied in the shower, massaged in, and left on skin for a couple minutes while you do the next bits. 2 minutes later you'll have bright, smooth and clarified skin. Magic.
  • Body Scrub: Whether you're getting your legs or arms out, it's nice to have smooth, exfoliated skin - especially with the drying tendencies of the cold weather. My scrub of choice is the Soap & Glory The Breakfast Scrub, mostly because it smells of maple syrup, and of course does the trick.
  • Shaving: Even though things can get a bit overgrown in winter (a bit TMI, but is it just me?!) a proper shaving sesh is paramount before a party. My favourite product to shave with is the L'Occitane Amande Shower Oil, which smells lovely of marzipan whilst retaining a freshness, and has a good 'slip' to it. It's a great 3-in-1 product to clean skin, shave, and to moisturise, meaning there is no need to slather on a moisturiser afterwards. This means no greasy texture or scent will interfere with your party dress (for me, a lifesaver, because I really dislike the feeling of body creams under clothing). Photographed above is a little mini I have, but I've gone through 2-3 full size bottles of this, and will happily go through more.
  • Nails: Last but not least, is a good manicure. This can be as protracted as you wish, but one product I've fallen in love with over the past year is OPI's Nail Envy base coat, which keeps my natural nails strong and looking their best, despite the potentially stripping and drying effects of successive polish cycles.

Now for the fun stuff... picking your outfit and makeup!
